I met Cathy Moore when I was in Indianapolis last year, having followed her blog Making Change - ideas for lively elearning since its inception. Cathy's blog is aimed fairly and squarely at instructional designers, encouraging them to 'dump the drone' and create more lively, powerful e-learning. Cathy's posts are beautifully written, imaginative and nicely presented, which makes me believe she probably does a pretty expert job as a designer.
So, Cathy volunteered to be the subject of my third Webcam Interview, which means this probably constitutes a series. Expect to see number four, an interview with Jane Hart, sometime soon.
I have uploaded the interview as a YouTube playlist, which you should be able to see below. If not, you'll be able to find it directly on YouTube here.
Great interview! For those of us diligently putting all 'learning' in the LMS (course/offering1, offering2...zzz...)its good to be reminded of the abundance of formats available (wikis, otj references, blogs) - good design is knowing which one goes best with the content, not just choosing the one you know. Thanks for the video (and the reminder)!
ReplyDeleteClive, I really enjoy watching these interviews. Your questions are excellent and it's really a treat to "meet" people online. What equipment do you use? How long does it take you to create and interview such as this one?

Thanks for this interview, Clive. I'm really glad I stumbled across Cathy's blog a year ago and am a loyal fan.
ReplyDeleteTo respond to Janet's questions, I record my video pieces using a simple Logitech webcam on my laptop. Interviewees do the same using whatever webcams they have locally. I then edit them together using Adobe Premiere (although you could jus tas easily use just about any cheap video editor) and export the movies for upload to YouTube.
ReplyDeleteBecause we can't get the quality we want recording live, we agree the questions by telephone, then record our questions and answers separeately. The editing does take a while. All in all, the whole process takes me about 5 hours per interview.
Yes, thanks Clive for putting the right questions. Cathy's voice is one of the most refreshing I've heard in the last few years and has inspired me to challenge a lot of what passes for elearning in my organisation.
