Evenings alone

I was reading in Management Today magazine about a new website called SkyLounge.com, which connects business travellers who want to meet up with like-minded souls when stuck in a strange town on their own with nothing to do in the evenings. Not a bad idea if you simply have to talk to people non-stop in every waking hour, but I must confess I enjoy the rare chance for some time to myself.

Where I most miss company is if I'm somewhere nice and want to take a look at the sights. I've never lived alone or travelled alone voluntarily, so I'm simply not acclimatised to solo tourism. However spectacular the local delights, I can only ever view my presence as a scouting mission - it's as if nothing really happens to me if it isn't witnessed by someone else.

My recommendation to anyone looking to fill their evenings alone is to take up blogging. Not only does it force you to reflect on your day, it also makes you the type of contacts that you feel happy to call upon if you happen to be in their city and all blogged out. I've spent several happy evenings with fellow bloggers around the world, and somehow I don't think I'd have met people so interesting on SkyLounge.com.
